Info

We are pleased to present Delirium, a solo exhibition by Nadja Schöllhammer at Gallery Weekend Berlin 2015. Nadja lives and works in Berlin. She is well known for her cut-outs, similar to reliefs, and particularly for her expansion of the drawing medium into three-dimensional installations which visitors can walk through. With ink, watercolour, graphite and even glue, fire and scalpel, Nadja creates a kind of Shakespearian tableau conceived of dreams and nightmares somewhere between Beauty and Fragility. Her pictures oscillate between various objects and drawings developed from layers of paper, pages of magazines and journals. She then paints over them, interweaving the stratified layers with her own glue-drawings to create a visual and physically tangible story, revealing a “World within a World”.

Delirium describes the most trenchant of dramas which appear through Nadja’s paper-made spatial structures. These are stimulated through her preoccupation with the rites and myths of other cultures. The viewer is almost unperceivably drawn into these complex and surreal narratives. The viewer’s senses are attacked, not only through luxuriance but also by the richness of the material. One wonders if they have become a witness to rage or do their own perceptions spin? Fragments, the filigree cut-outs from a collection of images are as connected with representations of violence and passion as are the events in the fanatastically excessive graphite drawings. Human existence is intertwined with internal and external, partly uncontrollable forces of Nature that reach a summit in “Delerium”.

Nadja Schöllhammer (born in 1971 in Esslingen am Neckar) was the winner of the art prize of the Förderverein Balmoral 03 e. V., which was awarded for the first time in April 2015 in celebration of the anniversary of the Künsterlerhaus Schloss Balmoral. In 2012 Nadja received a residency grant in Bad Ems (Rhineland-Palatinate). She studied at the UdK Berlin (Berlin University of the Arts) and gained her Masters degree under H-J Diehl. Following this she received various grants, for example a DAAD-Scholarship for Colombia in 2007 and Mexico in 2005 where she dealt, for example, with the Death Cult of the country. In 2008/2009 she obtained a scholarship at Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart and in 2012 another from the Senate of Berlin for Tokyo, Japan. Nadja has had lectureships a different universities, among them at the Berlin University of the Arts, Universidad Jore Tadeo Lonzano, Bogota, Colombia and the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. Between 2013 and 2015 she lectured at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee.
